Not usually and the benefit of Linux in general if you are doing it right is that if you do fuck yourself you can have a liveusb and have it entirely set back up in an hour. It's also way to easy to FUBAR your package manager in Linux desktops Things like turning off effects, VSync on or off, you can target frame rates, there are loads of things to do. Unity on the other hand had it's issues a few years ago but it is based on Compiz not Clutter so it doesn't have any issues, you can even tweak the behavior of certain things for even better gaming performance with Compiz config manager. The reason why Gnome3 has some massive issues isn't that Gnome's base technologies are specifically bad it's that Clutter and how the entire Gnome3 desktop was built is bad.
